| According to experts, drainfield failure rates are on the rise due to changes in the formulas of everyday household detergents and cleaning products and the excessive use of them. As these products are refined and improved, the effect they have on the biomat of the drainfield becomes more and more detrimental. In certain detergents, the ingredients bind with the lime in this area's water and the sandy soil, forming a permanent barrier between the sidewall and trench bottom and the underlying soil. When this situation occurs, the drainfield has failed. The secondary problem is the homeowner's tendency to use these products in larger quantities than what the manufacturer recommends. "More is better" is not always the case. Our recommendation is to use low sudsing, biodegradable detergents whenever possible, and to use them in the smallest quantities possible.
