Environmental Safeguards:
A conventional septic system that is correctly installed according to NMED regulations and is properly maintained is not detrimental to ground water nor public health.
That being said, in the State of New Mexico conventional septic systems are not allowed under certain circumstances. There are options available that may suit your needs.
SPLIT FLOW SYSTEMS (Option One)
A split flow system requires that a conventional system be installed and all waste with the exception of the toilet waste will go to that system. The toilet waste is directed to a separate tank that must be pumped when it fills up. The required high water alarm will let you know when you will need to call for service. How often this occurs depends upon how many persons are using the facilities. NMED requires that pumping records be kept by the homeowner and be available to them upon request.
SPLIT FLOW SYSTEMS (Option Two)
This system is installed as above with the addition of an Evapotranspiration Bed. This is a lined bed that is used to store water as it waits for the process of evaporation from the sun and transpiration from grass or plants. The waste from the tank designated for toilet waste only will then out to this ET bed to be used in a beneficial manner in that the wastewater is used by whatever is planted over the surface. Grass and small plants planted over these beds, once established, no longer need to be watered. A contract is not required for this system.
EVAPOTRANSPIRATION BEDS
This is a system that uses the Evapotranspiration Bed as a system for all the wastewater coming from the home or business. The water flows from the septic tank to an ET Bed that is larger than the one described in split flow as it must all handle much more water. It is what is termed a "non-discharging" system. It is used on lots that are considered either too small to allow discharge or lots that have already reached the maximum allowable discharge. You will need a sunny space for this bed to allow the sun to evaporate the contained water. Again, small plants and grass work nicely to utilize the bed for landscaping.
ADVANCED TREATMENT UNITS
Advanced Treatment Units (or ATU's) are basically a mini home treatment plant. As the wastewater flows through the treatment unit Nitrogen reduction occurs. This action allows the treated wastewater to be discharged into a conventional drainfield. NMED requires that the owner have a contract in place for monitoring the system. Also required is a schedule of sampling that decreases over time when acceptable results are achieved.
GREY WATER REUSE SYSTEMS
In order to reuse the greywater your home must be properly plumbed. Everything in the home with the exception of black water can be used to water trees and plants. So you will need two separate stub outs in order to send grey water to one tank and black water to another. We can simply install a tank to store water until you are ready to use it. Or, we can install a pump in a tank that will send water to your drip irrigation system.
